Abstract

The oligopoly market characterized by the dominance of a small number of business actors with high strategic interdependence presents the most complex and most difficult to predict competitive dynamics in the framework of contemporary industrial economics. This study aims to analyze the offensive and defensive competitive strategies applied by oligopoly market players in achieving the Nash equilibrium using a comprehensive game theory analysis framework. The study uses a quantitative approach with a game theory mathematical modeling method combined with secondary data analysis from the Indonesian telecommunications and banking industry as an empirical case study during the period 2020–2024. The results of the study found that in symmetrical information conditions, the dominant Nash equilibrium achieved tended to be sub-optimal (Prisoners Dilemma) with an average payoff of 23.7 percent below the maximum cooperative outcome. Aggressive offensive strategies (massive price reductions, large capacity expansions) are only optimal in the short term but consistently result in price wars that undermine the overall profitability of the industry in the long term. In contrast, defensive strategies based on differentiation and entry barriers have been shown to result in a more stable balance and more sustainable profitability. This research contributes to the understanding of how market participants can design competitive strategies that not only optimize individual payoffs but also maintain the stability of oligopoly market balances in the long term.
